Spring 2010
Dear Arnold Families and Friends,
Along with the blooming flowers and a few rain showers, Spring brings a myriad of activities to the Arnold community! Every week different grade levels are packing in authentic learning activities through field trips and special events. 4th graders get a chance to explore California History at local missions. 1st graders will observe the cultivation of their favorite fruits and vegetables at a local organic farm. Many students and their families are working on creative and engaging Science Fair projects which will be displayed at the Arnold Science Fair on March 25th. Activities like these that supplement the curriculum help students make connections between what they learn in the classroom and the real world. We take great pride in teaching the “whole child” and making learning relevant for students.
On a less positive note, you have most likely heard of California’s economic hardship and the result it will have on public education. This has and will continue to have a catastrophic effect on all school districts, including ours. You may not realize that since July 2008, TUSD has reduced the budget by over $35 Million. Class size has already increased and significant reductions have already been made in instructional materials funds and state categorical programs. The current analysis of this year’s state budget proposal is dismal. While uncertainty is the only thing certain during times like this, TUSD is still required to balance a budget with best current information. Recommendations have been made for an additional $18.6 Million reduction for 2010-2011 to 2011-2012. This will include substantial teacher layoffs as class size in Kindergarten -3rd grade will increase to 30. As parents, it is critical for you to stay informed by reading the literature sent home and emailed by the school and district as well as staying abreast of the governor’s state budget proposal and May revise.
As always, we welcome you on campus and value your input about your children. Parent participation, volunteerism, and support abound here at Arnold Elementary. We look forward to our continued work together during the last trimester of the school year.
Educationally Yours,
Mrs. Tasker, Principal
